The SmartCloud Services Node (SCSN) is the central control point of the overall cluster of SmartCloud Radio Nodes (SCRN) deployed throughout the enterprise. The SCSN is an enterprise appliance deployed directly inside the enterprise LAN providing overall traffic aggregation and session management for all mobile sessions delivered through the SCRN radio nodes.
In this context, the SCSN is analogous to the Enterprise Wi-Fi Switch where all radio node and session management functions are provided through a central control point. It is responsible for centralized access control, radio node management, auto-configuration, self-optimization, interference management, local data offload logic, soft-handover, and core network integration functions.
The SCSN is a disruptive service delivery platform capable of providing wireless session management across multiple radio access technologies. With mobile access technology evolution in mind, the SCSN has been designed from the ground up to remove the demarcation between different wireless access technologies. For example, with the initial implementation, the SCSN performs a subset of traditional Radio Network Controller (RNC) functions for the delivery of 3G UMTS services, but without the need to modify or generate new standards to provide the functionalities we promise to deliver. As the desire to evolve to different radio access technology combinations arises, the SCSN can activate session management functions for alternative wireless access methods without infrastructure changes.
Through this hybrid system architecture, the SCSN is uniquely positioned to provide universal wireless session management for all mobile services inside an enterprise, independent of radio access technology. It allows mobile operators to pre-deploy small cell radio node “real-estate” throughout an enterprise campus while activating various radio access technology combinations as desired.
